By Katie Lobosco | CNNThe Biden administration is canceling nearly $37 million of federal student loan debt for more than 1,200 borrowers who attended the University of Phoenix because it found that the for-profit school misled students about job prospects.Taking a narrower approach to student debt forgiveness, the Biden administration has continued to cancel some borrowers’ debts under existing programs after the Supreme Court blocked its broad student loan forgiveness program that promised to forgive up to $20,000 for low- and middle-income borrowers.Similar to Wednesday’s announcement about the University of Phoenix, the Department of Education canceled $72 million in federal student loan debt in August for more than 2,300 borrowers who attended the for-profit Ashford University in California.Altogether, the administration has canceled more than $117 billion of the nearly $1.7 trillion of outstanding federal student loan debt since 2021.The former University of Phoenix students n...

San Jose police set to classify gun-pointing as a use of force

SAN JOSE — Four years after it was recommended by the city’s civilian police auditor, the San Jose Police Department is expected to begin classifying instances where officers point their guns at people as a use of force.In a memo to the City Council that was formally reviewed Tuesday, police Chief Anthony Mata wrote that SJPD expects to update its duty manual to include the change by the end of the month. Gun, extended magazine seized from Santa Cruz County students

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KRON) -- A handgun with an extended magazine was brought onto a school bus by a Santa Cruz County student before it was found by a staff member, deputies said. The incident happened on Tuesday morning while students were riding a bus to Renaissance High School, an alternative school in the Pajaro Valley Unified School District. Several students began vaping in the back of the bus, prompting a staff member to escort the students off. "Shortly after being escorted off the bus by staff, one staff member believed someone from the group discarded something in a nearby bush. When staff went back to the area, they found the pictured handgun and extended magazine," the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office wrote. It's unclear if deputies have been able to figure out which student in the vaping group brought the weapon. ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — A young man who was trying to stop his car from being stolen was gunned down in Arapahoe County, his family told FOX31.The victim’s family said he heard someone messing with his car around 10 p.m. Tuesday. Ahmed Zainuldeen, 23, then went out to see what was happening at an apartment complex at East Harvard Avenue and Quebec Street.“He saw these guys stealing his car. He starts running to stop them.
