Colorado launches free college program for future teachers, firefighters, nurses

Coloradans interested in careers in nursing, firefighting or construction can now receive a free community college education as part of a $38.6 million state program launched this week that officials hope will shepherd thousands of workers into high-demand industries.The Colorado legislature approved the program — now dubbed Career Advance Colorado — in late April, building upon a similar, health care-specific training effort passed in 2022. This latest iteration, launched by Gov. Jared Polis on Tuesday, covers tuition, books, and other fees at 19 community and technical colleges statewide for students pursuing credentials in education, construction, law enforcement, nursing, forestry and firefighting.The programs generally take six months to two years to complete, depending on the field. Homeowner, residents of illegal RV encampment in Sylmar ordered to vacate

A judge has ordered an illegal RV encampment in Sylmar to be vacated.The homeowner, who illegally houses more than 20 RVs in her backyard, as well as those who live in the vehicles, were ordered to leave the property on the 14000 block of Hubbard Street by Sunday.While some residents praised the homeowner for giving them a place to live at a low cost, neighbors have raised health and safety concerns.The residence is zoned as a single-family home not meant to accommodate so many people.On Tuesday, multiple local agencies were at the property for a court-ordered inspection. Homes evacuated as brush fire breaks out in Jurupa Valley

Crews are battling a wildfire that erupted in Jurupa Valley on Wednesday afternoon.The Oak Fire was first reported in the 7100 block of Sierra Avenue around 2:02 p.m. according to the CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department.The flames quickly charred 35 acres of light, "flashy" fuels. Police investigating pair of 'smash burglaries' in La Verne

Police in La Verne are searching for at least two suspects who are believed to be responsible for two early morning break-ins last week.The break-ins happened at businesses on the 1500 block of Foothill Boulevard on July 15, according to the La Verne Police Department.Security footage shared by the Police Department showed two men smash the window of a Baskin Robbins and then push the broken glass in to gain access to the business. A second business, identified by police as Don Baja Grill, was also broken into under similar circumstances.Police did not specify what, if anything, was taken from either business.Both break-ins are believed to have been committed by the same suspects, police said. It won’t be easy for Californians to secure an apartment in certain cities across the Golden State.A new study from Rent Café identified the most competitive rent spots across the United States. In California, Orange County, San Diego, the Central Coast and Silicon Valley were listed among the most competitive rental markets in the country.Researchers at Rent Café analyzed Yardi Systems apartment data from 137 rental markets to see which areas were the most sought-after. These are the wealthiest and poorest counties in California Researchers only looked at large-scale multi-family properties with at least 50 units. Affordable housing units weren’t considered.Researchers calculated a score for each area to determine which rental markets were the most competitive. The A’s have already traded one of their marquee free agent signings from this past offseason.Oakland announced that it has Japanese pitcher Shintaro Fujinami has been dealt to the Orioles for minor league left-handed pitcher Easton Lucas.Fujinami, 29, signed with the A’s on a one-year, $3.25 million deal last offseason to much fanfare locally after leaving the Hanshin Tigers of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). The A’s hoped the right-hander could be a veteran presence in their bullpen, but he lost each of his first four starts, allowing 24 runs in 15 innings.He was moved to the bullpen and struggled initially, but save for three appearances as an opener, he’s found a groove since June began. For good reason — covers for coal cars are not commercially available.
