Denver businesses plan for minimum wage increase in 2024

DENVER (KDVR) — The start of 2024 will bring an increase in Denver’s minimum wage to $18.29 per hour.Denver's minimum wage adjusts every year based on the consumer price index to ensure wages keep up with Denver’s cost of living, according to a release from the city. PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Maine’s Democratic secretary of state on Thursday removed former President Donald Trump from the state’s presidential primary ballot under the Constitution’s insurrection clause, becoming the first election official to take action unilaterally in a decision that has potential Electoral College consequences.While Maine has just four electoral votes, it’s one of two states to split them. Trump won one of Maine’s electors in 2020, so having him off the ballot there should he emerge as the Republican general election candidate could have outsized implications in a race that is expected to be narrowly decided.The decision by Secretary of State Shenna Bellows follows a December ruling by the Colorado Supreme Court that booted Trump from the ballot there under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. Outgoing City Council President Ed Flynn said the vote to block $13.3 million in federal counter-terrorism funding for the metro region showed the council was “not serious about public safety,” an attitude he hopes will shift with four new members.Flynn, who had been pushing last week for an emergency meeting to reconsider the funding should the mayor fail to refile the federal grant by the end of the year, has since backed off of that last-ditch effort in 2023.“I wasn’t able to mobilize my colleagues together to assemble for a meeting,” Flynn told the Herald. “There wasn’t any support for it. By MIKE SCHNEIDER (Associated Press)The world population grew by 75 million people over the past year and on New Year’s Day it will stand at more than 8 billion people, according to figures released by the U.S. Census Bureau on Thursday.The worldwide growth rate in the past year was just under 1%. At the start of 2024, 4.3 births and two deaths are expected worldwide every second, according to the Census Bureau figures.The growth rate for the United States in the past year was 0.53%, about half the worldwide figure. The U.S. added 1.7 million people and will have a population on New Year’s Day of 335.8 million people. If the current pace continues through the end of the decade, the 2020s could be the slowest-growing decade in U.S. history, yielding a growth rate of less than 4% over the 10-year-period from 2020 to 2030, said William Frey, a demographer at The Brookings Institution.The slowest-growing decade currently was in the aftermath of the Great Depression in the 19...

Environmental groups threatening to sue over South Bay sewage spill

SAN DIEGO — San Diego environmental groups are threatening a lawsuit against the federal commission that regulates water infrastructure along the U.S.-Mexico border over the ongoing spill of sewage that has hobbled access to the region's southernmost beaches for years.San Diego Coastkeeper and the Coastal Environmental Rights Foundation (CERF) announced their intention to sue the International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC) over what they say are "hundreds of violations" of federal law in a 24-page letter sent to the agency on Thursday.These alleged violations stem from failing infrastructure at a sewage treatment facility near the border that has contributed to the "chronic" discharge of waste into the Tijuana River.
