Miami police fishing abandoned cars out of Doral lake

WFOR via CNNMIAMI, Florida (WFOR) — Miami-Dade police and Miami police divers are searching the murky waters of a lake in Doral were investigators believe as many as 30 cars are sunk on the bottom.Just after 10 a.m., a wrecker pulled the first car out of the water in the area of NW 90th Avenue and 13th Terrace, not too far from the CBS News Miami studios.Doral police said Sunday that they were alerted to the cars after the volunteer dive team, United Seach Corps, conducted a search of the lake over the water.“We have been informed that a private search company possibly located multiple sunken vehicles in the area of 9064 NW 13th Terrace. Although we cannot confirm at this time, we will continue to gather further information in the coming days and work with multiple entities to investigate this matter,” Doral police said in a statement.The search and recovery process is now in the hands of Miami-Dade police who also received word about the vehicles over the weekend....

University of California admits a record number of California freshmen for the fall of 2023

The University of California has admitted an unprecedented number of California students for the fall of 2023, with 88,285 first-year applicants coming from the Golden State alone.It’s an increase of 3.5% from last year, and part of an ongoing effort to get more Californians into the state’s higher education system. This year, the state’s budget included a 5% boost for the UC system — part of a multi-year agreement between Governor Gavin Newsom and the University of California — with the expectation that campuses would use that money to enroll more California students, among other educational objectives.Across the UC system, that seems to be exactly what happened. Admission rates for Californians increased to nearly 67% this year, as opposed to 64% in 2022.The surge was more prominent at UC Santa Cruz than any other campus. ANTIOCH, Calif. (KRON) -- An acting chief has been named for the embattled Antioch Police Department. This is happening as the department's current chief; Dr. Steven Ford is set to retire Friday while dozens of officers remain under federal investigation.Acting Antioch Police Captain Joseph Vigil has been named the new acting police chief.He was among four internal candidates interviewed by Acting City Manager Kwame Reed for the job, who ultimately made the decision. Barricaded suspect with knife arrested in Oakland

(KRON) -- On what's turned into a violent afternoon in Oakland, a suspect who police say barricaded himself into a restroom stall with a knife has been arrested, according to the Alameda County Sheriff's Office. Deputies assigned to Social Services at 2000 San Pablo Avenue responded at around 3 p.m. Tuesday to a man in his 40s who police say kicked a hole in the bathroom wall at that location. Home Depot guard shoots suspected shoplifter in San Carlos As deputies went to detain the man, he barricaded himself inside the restroom. The man said he had a saw-like knife, but police say he did not brandish it or threaten anyone with it.Officers from the Alameda County Sheriff's Crisis Intervention Unit, AC Transit Unit and the Oakland Police Department responded to the incident. Man who tried to ram cyclist with truck arrested again in Novato

(KRON) -- A man who police say tried to ram a bicyclist with a pickup truck last week has been arrested a second time in the span of just seven days, according to the Novato Police Department. Brian Collins, 59, was arrested on Wednesday, Aug. 2 after he allegedly tried ram a cyclist with his truck and shouted racial epithets.In that incident, Collins was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threats and hate crimes. Person shot dead outside Lake Merritt BART station A few days later, on Saturday Aug. 5, Novato PD received a call regarding a harassment incident in downtown. When officers arrived, they learned that Collins had been repetitively harassing the victim. Man found with fatal gunshot wound at Oakland park

(KRON) -- A male was found dead with a gunshot wound at an Oakland park on Tuesday afternoon, the East Bay Regional Parks District (EBRPD) said. EBRPD officers responded to the Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline boat launch at 2:19 p.m. for a reported shooting. They found the victim dead. An investigation into the incident is ongoing. There was a second fatal shooting in Oakland Tuesday right outside the Lake Merritt BART station. Police took a suspect into custody less than 90 minutes after that shooting. Former US snowboard coach Peter Foley suspended for sexual misconduct
