German compromise on gas and oil heating includes key exemptions

Germany’s ruling coalition on Friday evening reached a compromise on a controversial energy bill to ban the installation of new gas and oil-fired heating systems as of the start of next year, but the deal includes important exemptions and phase-in periods. According to the agreement, every newly installed heating system will have to be powered by 65 percent renewable energy starting January 1, 2024.The compromise contains a number of exemptions, introduces transition periods and includes dedicated financial support, Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported. The law will “bring about a mandatory switch to renewable heating,” Germany’s economy and construction ministries said. SAN DIEGO -- A man was shot by suspected robbers in the Lincoln Park neighborhood on Friday, authorities said.According to the San Diego Police Department, two individuals were sitting in a vehicle at 4800 Logan Ave. when three suspects, described by police as black men, walked up to the passenger side window and told the vehicle's occupants to "give them their stuff." CHICAGO — NWS Chicago has confirmed two tornadoes in the Chicago area -- neither is one in Belvidere where the theatre roof and marquee collapsed. Updates will show up here under the tab that says "tornado". 57 tornadoes and even more funnel clouds reported across 7 states in the Midwest and South. National Weather Service investigators will be looking into each one of these twisters in the next few days to track the speed and strength. Almost 300 reports of wind damage and wind gusts in the Chicago area reached more than 70 mph. 164 reports of large hail, 26 reports of hail 2" or greater in size which is the size of a chicken egg.

BELVIDERE, Ill. (WTVO) — One person was killed and dozens more injured at the Apollo Theater on Friday after a roof collapsed on concertgoers as a powerful storm and high winds swept through the area. The heavy metal band Morbid Angel was scheduled to perform. Authorities said the victim was a 50-year-old man. Belvidere Fire Chief Shawn Schadle said two victims are said to have suffered life-threatening injuries.Belvidere Fire Chief Shawn Schadle said in addition, ambulances transported two people who suffered severe injuries, 18 with moderate injuries, and 5 with minor injuries.Mercyhealth Dr. Matt Smetana said more than 40 people arrived at local hospitals for treatment.
