Olaf Scholz on budget crisis: No cuts to German welfare state

BERLIN — German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Saturday rejected his fiscally conservative coalition partners who are demanding cuts to social benefits, as the government tries to plug a €60 billion hole in its budget.“For me, it is very clear: There will be no dismantling of the welfare state in a situation like this,” Scholz said at the Social Democratic Party (SPD) convention in Berlin, during an eagerly awaited speech after weeks of silence on the subject. DA: Brockton shooting suspect hospitalized after being found with self-inflicted wound

A man sought in connection with the deadly shooting of a woman in Brockton early Friday morning has been found with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and was taken to a Boston hospital, where he remains in treatment, officials said.Gelson Fernandes, 29, of Brockton, is facing a homicide charge in connection with the fatal shooting of Stephanie Beatty, of Norwich, Connecticut, who was found dead in a vehicle on Nason Street, according to the Plymouth District Attorney’s Office.Investigators say Beatty and Fernandes were previously acquainted. Maine’s congressional delegation calls for Army investigation into Lewiston shooting

LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — Maine’s congressional delegation is calling for the Army to investigate the events that lead up to the October mass shooting – the deadliest in the state’s history – by one of its reservists.Robert Card killed 18 people in a bowling alley and a restaurant in Lewiston on Oct. 25, authorities said, and his body was found – with a self-inflicted gunshot wound – two days later. 2 hospitalized after crash sends tractor-trailer off overpass in Foxboro

Two people were rushed to the hospital late Friday night after a crash sent a tractor-trailer down an embankment next to an overpass in Foxboro, officials said.Fire officials say the the 18-wheeler was involved in a crash with another vehicle and ended up on Cocasset Street, where a passerby assisted in getting the driver out of the damaged vehicle.Both drivers involved were taken to nearby hospitals and are expected to survive.The cause of the crash remains under investigation.No additional information was immediately available.This is a developing news story; stay with 7NEWS on-air and online for the latest details.

Hundreds of Georgians march in support of country’s candidacy for European Union membership

1 dead, 2 wounded in shooting on West Side

CHICAGO — A man was shot and killed and two other men was wounded early Saturday in a shooting on Chicago’s West Side.Police said the two men were in a car near Hamlin Avenue and North Avenue around 1:20 a.m. and began shooting at another man on the street.That man, who police say is 31-years-old and a concealed carry license holder, returned fire.One of the men in the car was struck in the chest and died, according to police.
